Prothsodontics Certificate Program

This Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics educates qualified dentists for the specialized practice of prosthodontics, and fulfills the academic and clinical requirements of the American Board of Prosthodontics. The curriculum can be flexible for individual needs but primarily enables students to attain the special knowledge and skills for proficiency in the theoretical and practical aspects of Prosthodontics. The didactic and clinical components provide: advanced education in related and relevant biological and biomaterial sciences; in-depth experiences in fixed, removable, and implant prosthodontics; multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment planning; exposure to maxillofacial prosthetics at Roswell Park Cancer Institute; understanding and clinical experience in occlusion, temporomandibular disorders, orofacial pain, and geriatrics; the design, methodology, and analysis of research; and training in teaching.  The program is 36 months duration with 60 percent of that time devoted to patient and laboratory services. Upon satisfactory completion of the prescribed courses of instruction, a Certificate of Proficiency in Prosthodontics will be awarded to the student.

Prothsodontics/Ph.D. Program

The Prosthodontics/Ph.D. program generally requires 5 to 7 years for completion.  Students are required to perform research and complete a thesis at the Ph.D. level for this program.  The Ph.D. in Oral Biology is administered by Dr. Sarah Gaffen (716-829-2786). Students on this track are usually supported by a training grant funded by the National Institute for Dental Craniofacial Research. Please note that NIDCR support is available only to U.S. citizens, or to those persons with Permanent Resident status. However, support for non-citizens ineligible for NIDCR fellowships usually is available from teaching assistantships, or from individual faculty mentors with research funds.

Prothsodontics/M.S. in Oral Sciences Program

The research component of the Prosthodontics/M.S. Program in Oral Sciences is administered through the office of Dr. Ernesto DeNardin (716-829-3998). This track requires a minimum of 36 months to complete, and involves research in a variety of areas at the Masters Degree level.  At the present time there is no funding available for students enrolled in this program.  It runs concurrently with the Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics.

Please note that applicants wishing to pursue both the Prosthodontics Certificate and the Ph.D. or M.S. research programs must apply separately for each program. Please check the appropriate box on the application form to indicate which graduate program you are applying to (M.S. or Ph.D.), in conjunction with the Prosthodontics Certificate.
