The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine's program for Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) was founded July, 1991. This program is designed to reflect as closely as possible a private general practice setting, while still functioning harmoniously in a dental school environment.
An advanced educational program in general dentistry provides advanced training beyond the level of predoctoral education in clinical dentistry and applied basic and behavioral sciences, as well as refines those skills necessary for the generalist to provide comprehensive patient care for all population groups. It is a planned, sequential postdoctoral training program that is one year in length, and is specifically designed to meet the needs of graduates desirous of enhancing their skills as general practitioners. The program is a supplement to the predoctoral curriculum, but is not a required component of that educational sequence. An optional second year is offered that expands on the knowledge and experience obtained in the first year of the Program.
Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their past academic record, their demonstrated interest in pursuing general dentistry as a career and a personal interview. Applicant integrity, motivation, industry, resourcefulness, and background knowledge will be subjects of discussion during the interview.
AEGD RESIDENT PROGRAM
AEGD Residents are selected from students who have completed a course of study in a CODA accredited dental school and who have graduated with a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree. Applicants must have a New York State License, or be eligible for a New York State Limited Permit to Practice Dentistry. The AEGD program participates in both the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) and the National Matching Service (NMS). Applicants must complete and submit the PASS Application and also register for the Match through the PASS website. No independent applications are accepted.
AEGD Residents receive a salary during their year of training.
AEGD INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM
The School of Dental Medicine established the International Advanced Education Scholar Program with the goal of promoting and improving the level of dentistry at other dental institutions around the world. Through this program, current and future faculty members supported by their institutions (dental schools, hospitals, and government institutions) can receive advanced education training along with MS and/or PhD degrees. The AEGD Program participates in the International Scholars Program.
Please note that all AEGD International Scholars must concurrently pursue a research program; this is customarily an M.S. in either Oral Sciences or Biomaterials. Applications to AEGD will be considered incomplete unless separate application has also been made to one of the research programs.
AEGD International Scholars are required to pay all routine advanced education tuition and fees, as well as an extra fee to offset the costs of the scholar's training including program coordination, teaching, and research and certification in a clinical program. AEGD International Scholars do not receive a salary during their program.

2. A letter from the applicant's institution supporting his/her admission to the AEGD International Scholar Program and verifying that they will be returning to that institution upon completion of the program.
3. Three letters of recommendation.

5. Board scores (optional for International Applicants)
6. Official TOEFL Score Report at or above minimum of 550 (written) / 213 (computer based) / 79 (internet based) or better obtained within eighteen months of the application deadline.
