Our Mission

The Minority Dental Faculty Development (MDFD) Program has been made possible through funding from the American Dental Education Association and the W.K. Kellog Foundation. The purpose of this program is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in academic dentistry. The program will help to develop the academic careers of underrepresented minority junior faculty through training and advanced education. Funding will be used primarily for direct educational assistance to increase the number of underrepresented minority students recruited to and entering dental academic careers and to provide training and career development. Fellows will receive mentoring toward excellence in research and training in educational foundations toward excellence in teaching.

Program Information

The MDFD program will train fourth year pre-doctoral students, postgraduate dental students and junior faculty who have a commitment to academia; those who will commit to a full-time faculty position in a New York State Dental School.

Training that leads to a graduate degree is of the highest priority. Therefore, the program will offer financial assistance toward tuition and other school related expenses to underrepresented minority applicants who enroll in M.S., M.P.H. or Ph.D. programs.

Additionally, this program seeks to build the teaching skills and pedagogical knowledge of participants both formally and experientially. Fellows will be required to pursue formal training using on-campus and inter-campus resources from participating institutions with support provided.

Each program participant will be assigned a primary mentor with whom s/he will meet monthly and from whom s/he will gain counsel and guidance. The mentor will act as an advocate for the student, monitor progress and ensure that the student is receiving advanced training and is on target to become a faculty member. This should include training in the chosen discipline/degree area, curriculum design, educational foundations and teaching methods, performance evaluation and credentials. Mentorship toward excellence in research is a major component of this program. All fellows will be required to maintain a reflective ePortfolio for evaluation purposes and progress tracking. Formal documentation of the student's progress by the primary mentor will be required. To see a grid of what is funded, click here.

The program exists for senior pre-doctoral and postgraduate dental students, as well as junior faculty, who have both the interest and the potential to become full-time dental school faculty.
