International Dentist Program

The International Dentist Program will not be run in 2009; therefore no applications will be accepted for 2009.

Information concerning the International Dentist Program for 2010 will be posted to this website in Summer 2009.

The International Dentist Program is three years in duration and corresponds to the second, third and fourth years of the DDS program. Graduates receive a DDS degree and are eligible to participate in the various licensure examinations given across the country. The School of Dental Medicine accepts a maximum of four applicants to this program each year. To be considered, an applicant must be a graduate of a non-US/Canadian dental school and a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident.

Application Deadline

The deadline for applications is February 1. All necessary information and documentation must be received by the School of Dental Medicine on or before the application deadline.

Admissions Requirements

In order to complete the application folder and be considered for admission to the International Dentist Program, the School of Dental Medicine must receive the following:

• Application fee of $50.00
• Official transcripts/documentation from all college level/professional/ post graduate/ specialty-training programs provided directly to the School of Dental Medicine by the colleges/universities/institutions attended by the applicant. If it is not possible to provide documents directly, then a notarized copy of all necessary documents must be provided.
• All academic records must be submitted to ECE -Educational Credentials Evaluation (http://www.ece.org/) or Berlitz (http://www.berlitz.com). The translated documents must be forwarded directly to the School of Dental Medicine by the evaluation service, to provide assistance in the evaluation of the applicant’s academic record.
• Official TOEFL Score Report at or above minimum of 550 (written) / 213 (computer based) / 79 (internet based) or better obtained within eighteen months of the application deadline. Official TOEFL Score Reports must be submitted by using the institution and department codes below:

• Minimum Part I National Board Score of 80.  Official score report must be forwarded directly to the school by the American Dental Association.
• Photocopy of Permanent Resident / Citizenship documentation must be provided.

Communication Skills

An important consideration in the selection process for the International Dentist Program is the applicant’s effectiveness and clarity in verbal communication. It is essential both for completion of the academic program and for effective communication with patients in the clinics.

Admissions Process

Application folders must be complete at the time of initial review (after Feb. 1). Following initial review, the Student Admissions Committee will invite a number of applicants to come to the School of Dental Medicine, to meet with members of the committee, faculty, students, staff and to receive a tour of the facilities. While at the school, applicants will be asked to complete a bench test in the preclinic laboratory to demonstrate his/her skills in various procedures related to clinical dentistry.

Final review of applications will take place shortly after the visit to the school and bench test is completed. From those interviewed, a maximum of four will be selected to participate in the International Dentist Program.

Commencement of the Program

The program of study begins in early May. The initial session is approximately six weeks long and ends in the last week of June. The academic year begins in mid August following a break of approximately six weeks. Those selected are required to complete all courses in the second, third and fourth years of the DDS program regardless of scores achieved on Part I on the National Dental Boards.
