Accreditation Status

The University at Buffalo Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.  It also satisfies all requirements for board eligibility as outlined by the the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Description                 

This is a hospital based 24-month certificate program fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and is located at the Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo.  The Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo is a 225-bed pediatric hospital with its own obstetrical unit.  It is the only free standing children's hospital in New York and has been nationally ranked by U.S. News and World Report.

Our goal is to train students to become proficient in all phases of pediatric dentistry including:

Rotations to medicine, anesthesia, the emergency room and specialty pediatric clinics are also included.  Limited time is also spent teaching pre-doctoral dental students in the hospital and university clinics.

The clinical facilities include 18 operatories at the Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo and a satellite 8-chair facility at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo.  In addition, two private practice sites, the UB Dental School and a mobile dental van are available for clinical rotations.

Advanced Degree:

A certificate is awarded upon completion of the program.  The Pediatric Dentistry MS program is offered as a three-year program.  Clinical certification and awarding of a degree occur simultaneously.  Master's degree course syllabi will be selected, reviewed, and approved based on each resident's research interests and performance.  Approval of basic science courses must be obtained by the Program Director.

Research

All residents are required to complete and present an approved research project.  All residents must complete the Human Subjects Protection tutorial.  Residents must demonstrate that they have learned and understand the scientific process of research design, data collection, statistical analysis and public speaking skills (oral or poster presentation).  Residents may collaborate with and are encouraged to choose faculty outside the program as mentors to broaden their research experience.

Funding:

All pediatric dentistry residents are employed by the Graduate Medical/Dental Education Consortium of Buffalo and receive a stipend and benefits.  Current stipends are $37,150 for first year and $37,500 for the second year.  All usual benefits are included and there is no tuition for the certificate program.  Advanced degree students must pay University tuition for the courses taken.

Admission Requirements:

All applicants must possess a DDS or DMD from a CODA-accredited dental school and submit all application materials through the Postdoctoral Application Support Service ( PASS program).  PASS allows you as the applicant to provide standard information required for participating dental schools so that you do not have to complete multiple applications.  You will need to register with the National Match Service in order to obtain a Match code for your PASS application.  To register, go to the Match website: www.natmatch.com/dentres.

The deadline for PASS applications is December 1.

Interview Process:

All applicants will receive a written response from the Program Director.  Responses are either a declination of your application or a request for a personal interview.  Personal interviews are required for further consideration for admission to the program.

Five residents are accepted per year into the program.
