What’s really striking about oral biology is that all the complex interactions among different systems—bone and the immune system, inflammation and heart disease—are tied together and the oral cavity is a really good place to learn them.

A lot of the things we do are not completely unique to the oral cavity. They’re going to apply to other mucosal surfaces like the gut or vaginal surfaces or anything where there is basically a portal to the outside. There’s a lot of diversity.
