The unique thing about our PhD program is that, in most cases, the graduate students are also clinical residents, so they get a unique exposure to both worlds. For instance, in studying inflammatory mechanism in periodontal disease, a student will then go to the clinic and, even though he may not necessarily apply what he’s doing in the lab to the patient, now there’s an understanding of the molecular mechanism. Why is this person bleeding? Why is this tissue destroyed? Why has this bone disappeared? What’s happened? It’s a very unique approach.
