General Practice Residency

A resident's reflection...

I'd like to start out by stating that all aspects of the General Practice Residency program were productive and valuable... I was able to further perfect and expand my skills, far beyond that which I expected. This was largely possible due to my relationships with both staff, attendings, all of which provided me with guidance and support....

From Classroom To Private Practice, a general practice residency recruiting video (not specific to our program).
High Quality - This is a 12 minute video in a 120 MB MPEG file, so it will take some time to download. We don't recommend trying to download it over a dial-up Internet connection.
Low Quality - same video, but recompressed to 12 MB (requires Real Player).

Program Overview

The School of Dental Medicine General Practice Dental Residency (GPR) is affiliated with Kaleida Health,* a major teaching affiliate of the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. The Kaleida Department of Dentistry is a multi-site service providing a broad range of general dental and specialty dental services.

The Millard Fillmore Hospital (3 Gates Circle) serves as the primary training site for the General Practice Dental Residency. However, to optimize educational opportunities, resources across the system are utilized to provide required, as well as elective experiences. Throughout the program residents provide care for: inpatients, ambulatory patients, patients with developmental disabilities; as well as hospital employees and their families.

Skilled nursing facilities are another component of Kaleida’s service to Buffalo and Western New York. At times residents may work with attending faculty at one of several nursing homes. This population includes: geriatric patients, short-term rehabilitation patients, head trauma patients, patients with behavioral challenges and long-term pediatric patients.

Throughout the year approximately nine months are devoted to providing comprehensive general dentistry. The remaining time is divided between off-service rotations and didactic elements of program. Rotations include: oral and maxillofacial surgery, anesthesia, medicine, and emergency medicine. Lectures, seminars and conferences focus on oral medicine, interdisciplinary treatment planning, practice management, prosthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, journal club, literature review, risk assessment, etc. In addition residents are scheduled to work with the attending staff providing dentistry in the operating room.

The resources of the dental school, as well as the hospital network are available to provide a wide range of elective/optional experiences. Residents are encouraged to explore optional educational opportunities and pursue personal interests. Examples of elective opportunities include:

  1. Additional didactic opportunities, e.g. graduate, postgraduate and/or continuing dental education courses
  2. Supplemental supervised clinical experiences in dental specialties
  3. Involvement in research activities
  4. Special rotations or experiences in other hospital based departments or clinics
  5. Introduction to private practice via preceptor arrangements

An optional second year position is available to pursue further professional development in the hospital environment. Clinical experiences and didactic opportunities are arranged in response to personal preferences and interests. Resources of the University at Buffalo and Kaleida Health are available to support the second year opportunities.
