General Practice Residency

A resident's reflection...

I'd like to start out by stating that all aspects of the General Practice Residency program were productive and valuable... I was able to further perfect and expand my skills, far beyond that which I expected. This was largely possible due to my relationships with both staff, attendings, all of which provided me with guidance and support....

From Classroom To Private Practice, a general practice residency recruiting video (not specific to our program).
High Quality - This is a 12 minute video in a 120 MB MPEG file, so it will take some time to download. We don't recommend trying to download it over a dial-up Internet connection.
Low Quality - same video, but recompressed to 12 MB (requires Real Player).

Program Overview

The SUNY at Buffalo/Kaleida Health General Practice Residency is a 12 month hospital-based program fully accredited by the American Dental Association Council on Dental Accreditation.

The Deaconess Center, 1001 Humboldt, serves as the primary clinical training site. This facility was remodeled recently to accommodate patients with special needs. While the majority of patients are conventional outpatients, Special Care is an integral part of the program.

Buffalo General Hospital (BGH) is also used as a clinical site, both for general dentistry and for off-service rotations including Oral Surgery and Anesthesia. At BGH, residents have the opportunity to perform dental procedures in the operating room as well.

Mattina Community Health Center is the location for a rotation in Medicine. Educational experiences in Orofacial Pain and Implant Surgery take place at the School of Dental Medicine.

Throughout the year, approximately nine months are devoted to providing comprehensive general dentistry. The remaining time is divided between off-service rotations and didactic elements of the program. Lectures and conferences are scheduled in common with the other post-graduate general dental training programs in the Buffalo area.

The resources of the School of Dental Medicine as well as the Kaleida Health network are available to provide a wide range of elective experiences. Residents are encourages to explore optional educational opportunities.

An optional second year position is available to pursue further professional development in a hospital environment.
