The State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine is recognized both nationally and internationally for its excellence in dental research. With respect to grant and contract awards for research, it is consistently one of the leading dental schools in the United States. In partnership with industry, the school has participated in the introduction of several products for both the dental profession and the general public, ranging from dental materials to topical and systemic medications.
Research Settings The State University of New York at Buffalo is a research intensive public institution with a one hundred and fifty year heritage of excellence in the medical sciences. The University's Health Sciences Center comprises Schools of Dental Medicine, Health Related Professions, Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Nursing, and Pharmacy. The proximity of these schools fosters cross-disciplinary research. The Center for Dental Studies has access to facilities and faculty throughout the university.
Areas of Expertise and Focus The faculty affilated with the Center for Dental Studies, which includes national and international leaders in dentistry, comprises general dentists, board certified specialists, basic scientists in dental related research, statisticians, and computer specialists. Many center faculty hold M.S. and Ph.D. degrees; several have joint appointments in the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Sebastian G. Ciancio, Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontology and clinical professor in the Department of Pharmacology, is the center's director. Dr. Ciancio has more than twenty years of experience in coordinating basic and clinical research.
