The New York State Sealant Program for Underserved Children is funded by a grant from the New York State Department of Health, and is one of 24 grant recipients.  Our program has operated continuously since 1985.

The public school districts of Lackawanna and Niagara Falls have participated in a free, school-based Dental Sealant Program for the past eighteen years.  School-aged children in second and third grade participate in the program.

Dr. Elias J. Kaufman has directed this very important program since the Fall of 1990.  The Sealant Program has been very successful and important to the children in these economically depressed areas.  Classroom presentations and oral health information are sent home to the parents for consent.

"In combination with our services and the efforts of area dentists, together we achieve the 51% goal as recommended by Healthy People 2010," states Dr. Kaufman.

What are dental sealants?

Dental Sealants are a special, thin plastic layer placed on the top "chewing" sides of teeth and act as a barrier to protect teeth from decay.  Usually, sealants are placed on permanent molars (back teeth), where most dental cavities begin to form.  The sealant protects the tooth from bacteria and cavities.
